Updated call for NFC essential patents in 2008

Near Field Communication is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology which enables the exchange of data between devices brought within four centimeters of one another. It allows consumers to perform secure, contactless payments and other transactions, access digital content, and connect electronic devices.

This latest update of the call for patents essential to Near Field Communication by Via Licensing consists in expanding the list of technical specifications relevant to NFC devices. The additions to this call for essential patents notably comprise technical specifications published by ETSI namely TS 102 613 and TS 102 622 also known respectively as Single Wire Protocol (SWP) and Host Control Interface (HCI) as well as the Generic Control Record Type Definition (RTD) technical specifications published by the NFC Forum.

Any entity that believes that it has patents essential to one or several standards and technical specifications published hereafter is invited to contact Via Licensing in order to receive information about how to submit patents for essentiality review.

For complete submission information, please e-mail submissions@vialicensing.com, specifying your interest in submitting a patent or patent application for consideration of essentiality to the NFC Patent Licensing Program.

The list of standards and technical specifications covered by this call for essential patents comprises the following documents:

ISO Standards:
  • ISO/IEC 18092

  • ISO/IEC 21481 referencing ISO/IEC 14443-2, 14443-3 and 14443-4 A and B and ISO/IEC 15693-2 and 15693-3

ETSI technical specifications:
  • New!  ETSI TS 102 613 V7.0.0 (2008-02)
Version 7.0.0: Smart Cards; UICC - Contactless Front-end (CLF) Interface; Part 1: Physical and data link layer characteristics (Release 7) (published on November 5st 2007 and also known as Single Wire Protocol SWP)

  • New!  ETSI TS 102 622 V7.0.0 (2008-02)
Host Controller Interface (HCI) between NFC contactless controllers and electronic devices' application processors

NFC Forum technical specifications:
  • New!  Generic Control Record Type Definition (RTD)
Generic Control RTD provides a simple way to request a specific action, such as starting an application or setting a mode on an NFC enabled device (destination device) from another NFC device, tag or card (source device) through NFC communication.

  • NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF)
NDEF specifies a common data format for NFC Forum–compliant devices and NFC Forum–compliant tags)

  • NFC Record Type Definition (RTD)
RTD specifies standard record types used in messages between two NFC Forum–compliant devices or between NFC Forum–compliant devices and tags

  • NFC Text RTD (for records containing plain text that can be read by NFC-enabled devices)

  • NFC URI RTD (for elements that refer to an Internet resource that can be read by NFC-enabled devices)

  • NFC Smart Poster Record Type (provides the technical details to create records for smart poster “tags,” which are integrated circuits that store data that can be read by NFC-enabled devices)

Additional specifications to be approved by ISO, ETSI, the NFC Forum or other standardization bodies that will be mandatory or optional for the development of NFC devices will be considered by Via and its licensors for the development of a comprehensive licensing program.
